What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session

Choosing outfits is the part of a family session most people worry about. The good news: a few simple guidelines make everyone look great together, and none of them require buying a whole new wardrobe.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching white shirts and jeans can look dated. Instead, pick a palette of two or three colors plus a few neutrals, and let each person wear a different combination. Start with one outfit you love, often the one with a pattern, and build everyone else’s around it.

Choose Colors That Photograph Well

• Soft neutrals: cream, tan, gray, olive and denim.
• Muted or rich tones: dusty blue, rust, mustard, burgundy and sage.
• Skip neon colors. They reflect color onto skin.
• Be careful with pure white and pure black in bright sun, as they can lose detail.

Watch Out for Busy Patterns and Logos

Small, tight patterns like thin stripes or tiny checks can create a strange shimmer in photos, and big logos or text pull attention away from faces. One or two people in a soft, larger pattern is plenty.

Dress for the Season and the Location

In the DMV, the seasons change a lot. Spring and fall are popular for good reason, with comfortable temperatures and beautiful color. In summer, choose breathable fabrics and plan for evening light. In winter, sweaters, coats and scarves add warmth and texture. Think about the location too: flowing dresses suit a field or garden, while a city street pairs well with more structured looks.
